| Classification on Receipt (COR) (LTS Procedure #53) Scope: This procedure applies to printed monographic materials that, upon receipt, are ineligible for fast or copy cataloging and that are not immediately selected for original cataloging. Such items are handled in the manner outlined below, assigned full call numbers, and sent to the stacks to await overlay by Marcadia. This process is called classification-on-receipt, or COR. This procedure does not apply to non-book formats (serials, microforms, videos, scores, maps, or electronic resources). There are special guidelines for some kinds of printed materials. The first volume or volumes received in a multi-vol set should be searched for full copy. If copy is not found, the volume (regardless of whether or not it is vol.1) is still eligible for class-on-receipt. Each time a new vol. is added to a mutli-vol. record, the item should be searched for fuller copy, and if not found, added to the encoding level 3 record. Books with accompanying materials should be excluded from class-on-receipt and instead handled by original or copy catalogers as appropriate. Because of their unique workflow, CJK materials are also excluded from classification-on-receipt. Complete multi-vols are eligible for classification-on-receipt. Considerations Remember that COR records are, like input or vendor records, designed to be temporary. Do not fuss over them extensively. The primary consideration is that they be sufficiently accurate for Marcadia processing and that they correctly represent the item until a better record becomes available. The need for processing materials using classification-on-receipt varies from collection to collection. For those collections or areas that are likely to have copy available over 24 months, classification-on-receipt can be applied more liberally; for those collections where the proportion of unique items is greater, fewer items will be given COR. Your supervisor can provide additional guidance on the use of COR. Contacts: David Banush, Lois Peret Purcell Unit: Cataloging Date last reviewed: 02/08/06 Date of next review: December 2006 Indicates a brief record that does not meet the National Level Bibliographic Record minimal level cataloging specifications. Headings in the records may reflect established forms to the extent that such forms were available at the time the record was created. Modify the in-process record in Voyager to bring it up to the LTS standard for COR abbreviated level, as defined in this procedure. For the most part, retain data elements that are already present in the record you are modifying unless they are clearly in error.
Leave the default code in all other fixed field positions. Use the following table to determine what data elements should appear in the record. If other fields appear in the Voyager in-process record, use judgment to determine whether to revise or delete such fields. The guiding principles are these:
Name and series headings that are included in the input record should be examined for accuracy, but not added if absent from the input record.
Classify items using ClassWeb, LTS COR Manual, and Voyager catalog as appropriate. When classifying belles lettres (works of the imagination), check the author's authority record and use class number found there. In the case of no authority record/class number, use the class number predominantly used in Voyager, without agonizing over a decision. If no other records are found for your author, use the tables provided in the P classification. If the item is in a series, search Voyager to ascertain whether the series has been classed together. Do not agonize over which call number to choose if the series has been classed in more than one call number; make a quick judgment to select one that is appropriate for the item. Guidelines for Uncontrolled Subject Terms (653s) Add English words, translated generally from the title, to items written in foreign languages and to English-language books with titles that do not reflect their subjects. For example, the English title The high road and the low road, which is about bookmobiles, does not reflect the subject of the work, so you would assign a 653 field. However, do not apply these instructions to works of the imagination (novels, stories, poetry, plays). General rule: If item meets criteria for assignment of 653 field as outlined above, assign only one 653 field. Multiple terms may be assigned in some instances if appropriate. If you use a subject phrase, keep it brief. Format of 653 fields:
LTS Statistics Code for Classification on Receipt Add a 948 field for statistics tracking. Use first indicator 1 for cataloging transaction and subfield b z for classification on receipt. COR statistics are defined by the z (classification on receipt) from the 948 field and 3 (abbreviated level) from the encoding level field of the Leader. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
