LTSWeb Minutes, Aug. 21, 2006

The team went over a list of unfinished web projects drafted by Nate Rupp. Numbered questions are from Nate?s email; responses are in italics.

1. For LTS Services, you may wish to talk with Karen and Marty about the individual consulting work they have done and whether or not it is something that can be included on the site. Should ITSO also be included in Services? We could also (maybe) include the form that people can use to request that a title be purchased. Is there elsewhere on the site?

Nancy will follow this up with Karen, Marty, and possibly Elaine.

2. We had talked about creating a database for the projects and initiatives stuff that could be sorted by LTS Division and a number of different criteria. Currently, under the P&I section of the web site, we have two lists of projects--one for DBMS and one for Cataloging. Those could be combined in one list if it was sortable by Division.

This has been discussed in SMT and is clearly a very high priority, although we don't yet have specific database requirements. Matt has discussed this with Jim Reidy and describes this as "preliminarily in the pipeline."

3. I still am not able to upload the MARC record sets to the following page: <http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/ser/marc_records.cfm>. Earlier this summer, I talked with someone who told me that we would have to get a site administrator to add those types of files to the ones we are permitted to upload to the site. You should probably talk to Jim Reidy about this; the files I have are either .out or .mrc files and are located in Y:\public\Website Team\CTSFilesasof20060630\marcrecordsets. Once the files are uploaded to the site, you can just link to them from the page I've listed above.

Matt is following up.

4. Do we have a date stamp on the web pages yet?

This will require a change to the base page template; it?s in process.

5. If we want them to, do new items added to the site appear in "What's New"?

At this point, such a feature doesn't seem necessary or particularly desirable. We had a broader discussion in which we emphasized that it's important for all group members to be alert to goings-on in the department and potential What's New topics.

6. Did you ever figure out how to make numbered lists appear properly?

Sadly, no. However, this isn't as much of a problem when working directly in CommonSpot as it is when cutting and pasting text from other sources.

7. One of the things that slipped my mind is to notify selectors about the new locations of the NERF form (sorry). I could go ahead and do that now, but it might be better if the message came from the new LTS Web team.

There's been no outcry from selectors regarding this, so I can only assume that they've been able to find the new NERF form. I will follow up on this if it becomes necessary.

8. One of the weird things on the set of LTS Integration archive pages is that while I have an incomplete nav bar menu on the index page (<http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/who/fs/archives/Documents/tsi/>), I have a complete nav bar on second level pages (<http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/who/fs/archives/Documents/tsi/monupd.cfm>). I'm not sure why; may be you can take have Jim or Matt take a look at it sometime.

Matt will look at these and determine what, if anything, should be done.

9. Did you ever record our policy on how to deal with email links on the guidelines part of the web site? We were going to go with the netID as text on the page and the actual link was going to be mailto:[netID]@cornell.edu.

This policy is now part of the web guidelines.

10. Why did we take out the links to OCLC, NACO, RLIN from resources and tools? I think we talked about this, but I can't remember.

Lois and I, probably in consultation with other catalogers, will review

these links periodically and determine what's appropriate. A link to OCLC probably makes sense; RLIN, of course, not so much.

11. Did Lois ever get a chance to work with Anna to update the government documents page?

Done.

12. Do we really want to link to Webbridge and Webfeat in resources and tools? I think we talked about this and decided that they weren't yet ready for primetime, but they very well may be now.

We'll look at where these links should go, but informational links (some password protected) are appropriate.

13. Were the NetAdmins and MacroExpress pages ever redone?

The NetAdmins page is done and Lois is working on the MacroExpress page; the current page contains a note indicating that it is not completely up to date.

14. Did we ever reach a final decision on how the Site Index and Site Map would look?

No. Matt is looking at these and will work with Jim Reidy on improving the look of these pages, if possible, and changing "index" (in the second banner) to the more logical "site index," as we discussed last year.

15. Did we ever do anything with Hana's statistics page?

Lois has created new statistics pages, and there is an outside link to Hana's retroconversion page.

16. Was Nancy planning to link to Metadata procedures from the Metadata part of the web site?

Since there is currently only one metadata procedure, this isn't urgent. Nancy will review the situation if and when there's more metadata documentation to link to.

17. Was anything ever done with the music cataloger's files from the old CTS site?

Lois is finishing these; some are already online.

18. Did Michal ever finish the section for DBMS?

No, but Lois and Nancy cleaned it up and did some troubleshooting for Jim LeBlanc. Deb Warfield and Jena Bakula are currently doing routine upkeep. This raised the question of what to do when the links in the nav bar are different from the links on the main page, as happens frequently in the DBMS pages. While we can control this through the use of page categories, we should probably do this sparingly because of the extra work involved. The problem of a lack of coordination between the nav bars and the links in the page text can't be completely overcome due to the basic site architecture, but it isn?t usually more than a minor nuisance.

19. Did we ever save anything from the old ENCompass site?

There was little, if anything, from the ENCompass site that we thought was appropriate to keep when we (Nate and Jim) met with George Kozak to discuss the issue early this spring. We may review this later and include appropriate documentation in the site archives.
