| TS Procedures Team Minutes, Nov. 4, 2005 Present: Jim Alberts (chair), Margaret Nichols, Lois Purcell (recorder), Jim Spear, Deb Warfield Still Updating Procedures and Web Pages Jim Alberts incorporated some documents from the Voyager Manual into the Cataloging section of the LTS procedures table of contents (TOC) view at http://www.library.cornell.edu/cts/ctsproc.htm#catalog. We also added a new section to the TOC view page, which we call Configuring Voyager. That’s at http://www.library.cornell.edu/cts/ctsproc.htm#configure All of the files that we have recently added to the LTS Proc TOC view page will continue to be available from the Voyager Manual TOC page as well at http://www.library.cornell.edu/voyager/ Jim Alberts met with Jim Leblanc this week and Jim L agreed that merging the procedures into one place was a good idea, but he also supports leaving the Voyager Manual as is for now. Lois gave some history of the Voyager Manual and the many files that live there. When the TS website was created in the spring of 2004, Jim L. and Lois culled the procedures from the Voyager Manual that happened to be there for lack of a better place to put them. In other words, if they pertained to all TS processing centers, not just CTS, we had been putting them in the Voyager Manual for years. When we did the culling, we left only what was Voyager-centric in the Voyager Manual, but moved all of the others to the TS website. As a result, in addition to the Voyager-specific procedures and other files that make up the current look of the Voyager Manual TOC view, there are many other CUL-wide procedures and tools/resources that are listed at the TS website and no other place. One example is the procedure that is used to create patron checkout records at http://www.library.cornell.edu/voyager/PatronCheckout.html . It’s listed at the Cataloging section of the TSWeb site map. See http://www.library.cornell.edu/tsweb/sitemap.htm#C Lois agreed to go through the TS website, using the sitemap at http://www.library.cornell.edu/tsweb/sitemap.htm as a guide. She will add links to the various procedures to the LTS Proc TOC view page, integrating them into appropriate categories. For now, we will not add links to the documents that are considered Tools (rather than procedures). An example is the oversize chart at http://www.library.cornell.edu/voyager/Holdings/oversize.html which is listed on the TSWeb at the local resources page in the Cataloging section at http://www.library.cornell.edu/tsweb/cataloging/RefTools.htm Our basic premise is that we will use the "build in redundancy" mantra and make all LTS documents easy to access from as many places as possible. And we will keep all Voyager Manual links working just as they are until we have a clearer idea how access will work in Common Spot. Netadmin-related Documents and Web Resources Jim A will create a new area for netadmin-related documents to the LTS Proc TOC view page. He also agreed to think about what we should do with documents like the language list that has always lived in the CTS website, but is currently being upgraded by LTS managers to include all LTS staff. It’s available at http://www.library.cornell.edu/cts/langlist.htm and is listed on the CTS homepage under Department Information bullet. RMC-related Assignment Margaret agreed to check with Eli Brown to find out the status of some "how to" documentation for archival processing. Neither Jim A nor Margaret is sure of the current form of that documentation. Examining TS Web pages from other University Libraries We summarized our opinions about the variety of web pages that we had looked at from other institutions. We discussed various features and looks of the pages and most of us agreed that we liked many of the features that Princeton has incorporated in their site at http://infoshare1.princeton.edu/katmandu/catman.html One of these features is a page of 'Information for public services,' which allows public services staff to go directly to just those parts of the TS documentation that pertain to their work. We also noted that Cal Tech at http://library.caltech.edu/ has a great navigation bar. Jim S commented that some webpages from other institutions use Voyager screenshots. He volunteered to communicate with staff from some of those other institutions to ascertain whether our understanding that using Voyager screenshots is forbidden, might be outdated information. |
