Electronic Resources Committee Minutes Attending: David Banush (guest), Nan Hyland, Bill Kara, Marty Kurth, Ed Weissman, Scott Wicks 1. Business & Industry and OECD Nan reported that the Business & Industry (B&I) aggregator includes an average of only 20% full text for the journal titles it covers. Because of the sparse coverage, Nan consulted with Don Schnedeker about removing title-level access for B&I titles from the CUL catalog and e-journal list. Don and Nan recommended that we drop title-level access. ERC members concurred. CTS Acquisitions will remove B&I from our Serials Solutions profile so its titles will not appear in the September edition of the e-journal list. Marty will request that CTS Database Quality and Enrichment delete all B&I records from the CUL catalog. 2. Classification of e-resources David Banush from CTS Bib Control Services joined us to discuss the pros and cons of CTS assigning LC classification numbers to e-resources. Though ERC members generally saw no need to classify e-resources from an access point of view, we felt that other functional groups such as CD-Exec and IRPC would likely want to weigh in on the issue. David will provide a brief summary of the issues that Marty will then forward to CD-Exec and IRPC Steering. 3. PURLing URLs in CUL catalog and e-Reference Collection records David led ERC in a discussion in which we compared the staff cost of PURLing all URLs in CUL records with the benefit of maintaining PURLs versus native URLs. ERC felt that PURLs might continue to be warranted for locally developed digital resources, but we were generally in favor of ceasing comprehensive PURLing. To feel more confident of our support for stopping comprehensive PURLing, some ERC members agreed to consult with selected CUL staff members and report back to the group. We agreed to reach a decision by email or at our next meeting. The next ERC meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 23, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in 702 Olin. Meeting notes by Martin Kurth | |
