It includes many songs from the heyday of antebellum black face minstrelsy in the 1850s and from the abolitionist movement of the same period. Numerous titles are associated with the novel and the play Uncle Tom's Cabin. Civil War period music includes songs about African-American soldiers and the plight of the newly emancipated slave. Post-Civil War music reflects the problems of Reconstruction and the beginnings of urbanization and the northern migration of African Americans. African-American popular composers include James Bland, Ernest Hogan, Bob Cole, James Reese Europe, and Will Marion Cook. Twentieth century titles feature many photographs of African-American musical performers, often in costume. Unlike many other sorts of published works, sheet music can be produced rapidly in response to an event or public interest, and thus is a source of relatively unmediated and unrevised perspectives on quickly changing events and public attitudes. Particularly significant in this collection are the visual depictions of African Americans which provide much information about racial attitudes over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. nSheet Music Collection of Brown University Library. aMode of access: World Wide Web. aSystem requirements: Internet connectivity, World Wide Web browser and Adobe Acrobat reader.40uhttp://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award97/rpbhtml/aasmhome.html2http aDLFPAC0 a20020129bidbatchects1 a20020129bsdbatchectsfe3 a20020129hDLFPACi1-288delimwoutCU.txt aNoEx02133cpc a22002653a 4500001000800000005001700008006001900025007001400044008004100058035001200099040001300111245009100124260003400215500004800249520106100297534019301358538003601551538009701587856006101684899001101745948002801756948003101784948004301815995000901858415706720051114191001.0m | crmnu---|||||020110nxxxx xx s und d a4157067 aNICcNIC00aAlexander Graham Bell Family Papers at the Library of Congressh[electronic resource]. a[S.l.] :bLibrary of Congress aTitle from Digital Library Federation list. aA selection that will total approximately 4,700 items (totaling about 38,000 images). This first release contains 1,400 items consisting of correspondence, scientific notebooks, journals, blueprints, articles, and photographs documenting Bell's invention of the telephone and his involvement in the first telephone company, his family life, his interest in the education of the deaf, and his aeronautical and other scientific research. Dates span from 1862 to 1939, but the bulk of the materials are from 1865 to 1920. Included among Bell's papers is his experimental notebook containing the entry from March 10, 1876, describing the first successful experiment with the telephone, during which he spoke through the instrument to his assistant the famous words, "Mr. Watson -- Come here -- I want to see you." Bell's various roles in life as teacher, inventor, celebrity, and family man are covered extensively in his papers. Not to be confused with sheet music, song sheets are single printed sheets, usually six by eight inches, with lyrics but no music. These were new songs being sung in music halls or new lyrics to familiar songs, like "Yankee Doodle" or "The Last Rose of Summer." Some of America's most beloved tunes were printed as song sheets, including "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Song sheets are an early example of a mass medium and today they offer a unique perspective on the political, social, and economic life of the time, especially during the Civil War. Some were dramatic, some were humorous; all of them had America joining together in song. nHoldings of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress . aMode of access: World Wide Web. aSystem requirements: Internet connectivity, World Wide Web browser and Adobe Acrobat reader.40uhttp://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amsshtml/amsshome.html2http aDLFPAC0 a20020129bidbatchects1 a20020129bsdbatchectsfe3 a20020129hDLFPACi1-288delimwoutCU.txt aNoEx01423cpc a22002773a 4500001000800000005001700008006001900025007001400044008004100058035001200099040001300111245006500124246005000189260003400239500004800273520043700321534007300758538003600831538009700867856005900964899001101023948002801034948003101062948004301093995000901136415707120051114191006.0m | crmnu---|||||020110nxxxx xx s und d a4157071 aNICcNIC00aAmerica's First Look into the Camerah[electronic resource].30aDaguerreotype Portraits and Views, 1839-1862. a[S.l.] :bLibrary of Congress aTitle from Digital Library Federation list. aSelections from the Library's daguerreotype collection that consists of more than 650 photographs dating from 1839 to 1864. Produced between 1891 and 1936 by a group of American botanists generally regarded as one of the most influential in the development of modern ecological studies, these photographs provide an overview of important representative natural landscapes across the nation. They demonstrate the character of a wide range of American topography, its forestation, aridity, shifting coastal dune complexes, and watercourses. Comparison of early photographs with later views highlights changes resulting from natural alterations of the landscape, disturbances from industry and development, and effective natural resource usage. The photographs were taken by Henry Chandler Cowles (1869-1939), George Damon Fuller (1869-1961), and other Chicago ecologists on field trips across the North American continent. Among the natural features these images document are ecological settings such as dunes, bogs, forests, and deserts; individual plants from the Ponderosa pine and birch to grasses and mosses; landscape features like the Grand Canyon, Lake Superior, and the Sierra Nevada; and the consequences of natural and human changes to the environment ranging from erosion and floods to irrigation and lumbering. The collection also includes photographs of University of Chicago botanists as they conducted field research, led students on summer field classes, and traveled across the North American continent on tours including the International Phytogeographic Excursion of 1913. nImages in the American Environmental Photographs Collection at the University of Chicago Library. The New York images are the products of one artist's highly individual vision and complex motivations, Abbott's response to her own observations about the rapidly changing built environment and her concepts of an appropriate formal vocabulary for photographic documentation. In 1992-93, the National Endowment for the Arts funded a thorough inventory of the Changing New York archive held by the Library comprised of more than 2200 mostly vintage 8 x 10 contact prints from about 300 negatives. The collections document achievements in architecture, engineering, and design in the United States and its territories through a comprehensive range of building types and engineering technologies including examples as diverse as windmills, one-room schoolhouses, the Golden Gate Bridge, and buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. As of March 1998, America's built environment has been recorded through surveys containing more than 363,000 measured drawings, large-format photographs, and written histories for more than 35,000 historic structures and sites dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. This first release adds digital images to the searchable on-line catalog records, including images of the pages of written histories for all HAER surveys and about 25% of HABS surveys, 17% of the HAER survey photographs and a small sampling of the HABS and HAER measured drawings. Additional digital images will be added monthly. As an example, the on-line catalog record for the Beebe Windmill in Suffolk County, New York, shows how the full range of documentation for a survey will be displayed once it has been digitized. nSelections from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress . aMode of access: World Wide Web. aSystem requirements: Internet connectivity, World Wide Web browser and Adobe Acrobat reader.40uhttp://memory.loc.gov/ammem/hhhtml/hhhome.html2http aDLFPAC0 a20020129bidbatchects1 a20020129bsdbatchectsfe3 a20020129hDLFPACi1-288delimwoutCU.txt aNoEx01648cpc a22002773a 4500001000800000005001700008006001900025007001400044008004100058035001200099040001300111245004600124246005200170260003400222500004800256520066900304534008300973538003601056538009701092856005901189899001101248948002801259948003101287948004301318995000901361415710820051114191045.0m | crmnu---|||||020110nxxxx xx s und d a4157108 aNICcNIC00aBy Popular Demandh[electronic resource].30a"Votes for Women" Suffrage Pictures, 1850-1920. a[S.l.] :bLibrary of Congress aTitle from Digital Library Federation list. aSelection of 38 pictures includes portraits of many individuals who have been frequently requested from the holdings of the Prints and Photographs Division and the Manuscript Division. Instead of using geographically based tiles individual countries may be chosen and then data layers specified (there are 17 layers of cultural and physical data) to build digital maps for use in an Arc form GIS.
