Creating LTS Subsites in CommonSpot

  1. Go to: http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/admin.cfm
  2. Under User Login, click Sidecar/CUWebAuth.
  3. Use the Quick Navigation (upper right side of screen) drop-down to navigate to the subsite where you intend to create a new subsite.
  4. Next, click on Subsites, and then click on “Click here to add a new subsite”.
  5. Fill in the following fields:

  • Subsite Name: select a maximum of three letters that are unique from all other subsites within the LTS site. (i.e., ms-metadata services, pi-projects and initiatives, etc.) as the name for the subsite. Here is a list of existing subsites and their respective names (unique letter combinations): http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/tra/cs/techinfo.cfm
  • Description: information that is not viewed by the public (i.e., content notes, design comments, etc.).
  • Display Name: enter a maximum of two words, regardless of word length.  This field will also populate the side-navigation and the breadcrumbs.

  1. Click configure.
  2. Click on Subsite Properties, then click “Click here to configure this site's subsite properties”
  3. Scroll down and click on Additional Settings, then scroll down to template variables and enter “sortorder=”, followed by a number, which is in block of ten’s (10’s). For example, sortorder=10, sortorder=20, sortorder=30, etc. The number 10 represents the first subsite to appear in the left-navigation, the number 20 represents the second subsite, and so on.  Therefore, sorting of subsites in any particular subsite is independent of the default alphanumeric sorting feature.
  4. Create a “home page” for the new subsite, which will be named index.cfm.  All subsites have homepages (index.cfm), and these pages share the same name throughout the entire LTS site.  NOTE: Never assign a name other than the index.cfm name to a subsite’s homepage because it will cause the left-navigation to fail.
  5. To create a “home page” for the new subsite, follow the instructions “Creating LTSWeb pages in CS”.  But remember to ONLY add “index.cfm into the Name field in the create new page window, otherwise the navigation will fail.
