Telephone Use

The proper use of telephones becomes especially important because it affects the ability of LTS as a whole to perform at an adequate level. In crowded work environments like rooms 110 and 107, consideration for others is extremely important.

The telephones in the departments throughout the library are to allow staff to conduct library business. Aside from unavoidable or emergency situations, the use of department telephones for other than library business should be kept at a minimum. Incoming personal calls from the offices of doctors and dentists during their business hours are unavoidable, as are occasional brief calls from/to family members.

Staff are expected to inform their family and friends that incoming calls should be limited.

Out of consideration for colleagues the noise level of telephone conversations should be kept to a minimum.

The policy for the use of cell phones for personal calls is the same as that for the use of office phones for personal calls.

Staff should not leave personal cell phones at workstations turned on and unattended.

Staff who need personal telephone authorization codes for business use will be issued one by Facilities & Business Operations, and will be initiated by the unit supervisor.

Staff should use personal phone cards when it is necessary to make personal long distance calls from department phones. See University Policy 3.19, Telephone Usage.

Email Use

LTS staff need to read email throughout their workday to keep apprised of both CUL-wide and LTS-specific issues and announcements. Business often needs to be conducted via email as well. Personal messages should be sent only on the staff person's own time.

Internet Use

It is often necessary for LTS staff to search the internet in the course of doing their jobs. Personal internet searching should be done only on the staff person's own time.
