Computer Software Used in LTS Olin (LTS Procedure #25)

Scope: Software listed as "Core" are installed on all workstations. Other packages listed are supported by LTS Olin, but a request needs to be made from a supervisor to the NetAdmin Coordinator before the package may be added to a machine; netadmins are responsible for installing all copies/versions of software on the core and supplemental lists. Software on the "Highly Discouraged Software" list is known to cause problems.

  Non-Work Related Software in LTS

Staff may request that non-work related software be installed on their computers. One example is software for use in playing music on a computer while working. Other requests for video streaming to view news or other topics on the web have been sought. In the future, other software may be desired. In that light, LTS policy is as follows:

  1. Staff must make such requests through their supervisor.
  2. If the supervisor agrees, then the request is forwarded to the LTS NetAdmins.
  3. The software must not interfere with work related software.
  4. If it?s a new software type, it must be reviewed and verified to safely operate on LTS computers by the Olin NetAdmin Coordinator in consultation with Desktop Services. It must then be approved for staff use by the LTS Senior Management Team.
  5. If at any time the software causes problems on a computer or the privilege is abused by the staff member, the NetAdmins will remove the software as directed by the supervisor.
